Kenny is super fortunate that his company allows him to work from home. Our apartment has a rather large living room (for New York, of course) and Kenny has set up a great office area and is already back at work. As for me, my first priority after moving was finding a good survival job. My job requirements: I want a job that allows me a steady paycheck in a convenient location with (hopefully) some flexibility in scheduling...so that I can attend castings and auditions. (The main reason why I wanted to move up here!)
While in Richmond, I got a head start on job hunting via Craigslist Ads. I scheduled four interviews for Monday, two for Tuesday and another two for Wednesday - our first week in New York! I've always considered myself a go-getter and I knew I needed to give 100% to get a job that would meet my needs. I prepared ahead of time by interviewing over the phone and making a notebook with copies of my resumes and references. I even mapped out all of my interview locations. Sunday night I went to bed early in order to rock my first full day of interviews.
Fast forward to 5am, my alarm goes off and my stomach is KILLING me. I just feel like crap. I'm thinking "Not TODAY!!!". I pop two ibuprofen and sleep for another hour. After I wake up, I'm feeling better. I take a shower, grab a fiber plus bar (maybe not the best choice?) and head out the door. I hit up Jamba Juice before my first interview and feel pretty good. My first interview goes well. The pay isn't what I need, so I prepare for my next one a few hours later. I eat some cheddar and peanut butter crackers (not a good idea....) and find my way to a bench in Madison Square Park.
All of a sudden, I feel extremely nauseous, I have chills (although it's warm out) and I can't move for about an hour. My next interview is approaching, so I find a deli with some ginger ale and sip on that until I have to go.
The interview is at a temp agency and goes rather well...considering I am moments from collapsing in the middle of Manhattan. Afterwards, I feel pretty bad. I'm hot and I'm freezing cold. I am moments away from crying and looking like a crazy lady, so I make the decision to re-schedule the other two interviews and go home. I walk from my interview to the subway and catch the N train back to Astoria. My plan: to get some Pepto Bismol at CVS. The subway ride is no fun...
Before I finish the story I must preface it with this: I NEVER throw up. The last time I threw up, I was a freshman in college who drank too much. I get sick like anyone else, but I refuse to throw up. I hate throwing up. Well wouldn't you know...I threw up. : ( After I bought my Pepto, I realized I needed to make my way to the bathroom ASAP. I followed the nice, pregnant CVS employee, but couldn't quite make it to the bathroom. I puked multiple times in the aisle.
FUN FIRST DAY IN NEW YORK, HUH?!?!
Kenny came to meet me and walked me back to our apartment. I come to find out I have a fever and I am genuinely ill. I take the next couple days to recuperate and by Wednesday afternoon, I'm feeling back to my usual self! Seems that my immune system was down from the stress of moving and I caught a stomach bug.
As for jobs... I've had a couple offers, but haven't found the right fit. I had another interview yesterday that I have a good feeling about and I'm waiting to hear back. In the meantime, I've been hired by a temp agency and snagged an office job for this week!
I have to trust in myself that everything will work out as it should. Once I feel confident about being able to survive in New York City, I can focus on pursuing acting.
Gemma: Saw this on your mom's fb page. Congratualtions on the move. We used to spend time in Elmhurst every summer at Jeff's aunt's house just off Queens Blvd. We always had a great time. Love Central Park. Best wishes. Donna Gill
